Description
Ralf Andrén, a survival instructor with All In Nature Sweden, brings a grounded, experience-based Scandinavian perspective to this question. With a lifelong connection to nature and wilderness skills, Ralf represents a tradition where tools are not gadgets, but essential companions shaped by climate, landscape, and necessity.
In this session, Ralf demonstrates how edged tools such as axes, knives, and saws have historically shaped everyday life in Scandinavia — and how, in turn, these tools evolved in response to the practical needs and harsh conditions faced by their users.
Historically, the ability to manufacture, maintain, and repair everyday objects at the individual level was not a hobby — it was a matter of survival. This reality formed a strong and proud Scandinavian tradition of craftsmanship and tool use, with deep knowledge of how to select, care for, and safely use sharp steel tools. Much of this knowledge is still alive today in large parts of Scandinavian society.
Learning these principles can enhance your bushcraft skills, but they may also become critically important in situations where self-reliance and survival depend on your ability to work effectively with limited resources.
Ralf’s teaching is rooted in both formal competence and extensive practical experience. He is a registered nurse and has worked as a development engineer, combining technical understanding with a strong safety mindset and hands-on wilderness practice. Known among participants for his calm, pedagogical approach and constant curiosity, Ralf has a rare ability to make complex skills accessible while maintaining respect for traditional methods and modern safety standards.
His passion for exploration, problem-solving, and learning from nature makes this session both inspiring and highly practical — suitable for beginners as well as experienced bushcrafters who want to deepen their understanding of Scandinavian toolcraft and survival philosophy.
