Make a Bronze Axe Head

£60.00

Go back to the Bronze Age and make your own axe head.

Learn how our ancestors made tools and weapons using bronze. During this fascinating workshop, we shall safely instruct you how to create your own axe head in solid bronze. You will have the choice of three styles, including crafting a replica of the axe-head used by ‘Otzi’ The Iceman!

After watching a demonstration by cast-master Jonathan Cope, we will guide you through the process of preparing your own sand mould ready for casting. Our furnace will then be fired-up (1,000 degrees!) to melt the bronze. Whilst waiting, you will learn more about the Bronze Age whilst handling some replica implements. Jonathan will then pour the liquid bronze into the prepared moulds. Each participant will then break their bronze axes out of the moulds and quench it in cool water – lots of steam! After admiring your creation (a great photo-op) you can commence the cleaning and polishing operation with provided tools and PPE – the final finish being dependent upon how much effort you put in. Should you wish, you can then decorate your axe with metal stamps. Welcome to the Bronze Age!

Please note that these classes are VERY popular – you are advised to make your booking asap!
